5 Steps - Manual Handling Risk Assessment
- What is the load? It is important to identify the load and whether or not the size/weight is constant or is likely to vary. If the item is going to be a similar size and weight then it will make the control measures you intend to implement easier as they will remain the same. If the loads that you intend to move vary then it would be advisable to implement control thresholds for different types of loads.
- The environment is an important factor to consider when carrying out a manual handling risk assessment, will the individual have a clear passage to move the loads, is the distance far and what potential environmental hazards are present, this could anything from poor lighting to uneven flooring.
- The frequency of the operation is also important; if it is an activity that will only be carried out on an irregular basis then it may be easier to plan for ensuring that person responsible will have appropriate assistance and support. If it is a regular operation then depending on the nature of the item you should clearly allocate the job to an appropriately trained person who is aware of the associated hazards and has sufficient resources (equipment or colleagues) to call upon.
- The physical attributes of the individual carrying out the task should also be assessed i.e. capability. There are a number of areas her that need to be looked at, in particular; age, gender and physical health, it might be quite possible that different individuals will need varying levels of support and equipment to complete a task safely. There are thresholds for male and females, but it is important to remember that everyone is different and therefore they are thresholds that should not be exceeded but not used as a control measure.
- Review, this is important and depending on the nature of your industry will vary, if a particular job task varies in any way or your team changes then you should carry out another assessment to see if control measurements are still suitable and adequate. It is advisable that appropriate training is delivered to your team promoting a proactive approach to Health and Safety, the benefits of this are that your team will report any issues or concerns before they can cause an accident and ensure that your assessments are kept accurate and your workplace safe.
